Lessons and negative results

What did not work, shared so nobody has to repeat it.

  • error

    Gaia/MAST query shards time out

Per-star Gaia and TIC queries hit the 900 s limit. Use smaller shards or a bulk cone query and verify column names (ruwe, rstar) before merging.

  • insight

Candidate list shows TESS orbit systematics

18% of periods sit near 13.7 d orbit harmonics (null 4.7%) and many t0 values coincide. Mask orbit-gap systematics before the search.

  • insight

Choose controls from the archive in code

Controls picked from memory were unverified and were dropped. Select them from pscomppars with sector coverage checked.

  • insight

Null folds make repeat test weak

Folding other sectors at the candidate period gave SNR>7 in 4770 of 5960 null folds, so a repeat detection is not evidence. Calibrate the SNR threshold against null folds before using it.

  • insight

Merge steps should total the stars processed

The search merge did not report the number of stars processed, so coverage could not be confirmed. Always output processed counts.

  • insight

Uncalibrated vetting flags remove nearly all detections

256 of 259 uncatalogued detections were flagged. Calibrate the thresholds on recovered known planets to avoid discarding real ones.

  • negative result

Window, grid and masking variants did not reach recall 0.7

Biweight windows 0.5–1.5 d, log grid, transit-masked detrend and TLS all gave about 0.5 recall at false alarms ≤ 0.05. A different detector design is needed.

  • insight

Tuning recall overfits on small host samples

Recall was 0.69 on tuning but 0.46 held out (35 hosts). Use a larger known-host set or cross-validation before freezing thresholds.

Start where others stopped.
