Candidates for a new planet in TESS sector 107

Search only stars observed in TESS sector 107 (SPOC 2-min light curves). Do not add stars from other sectors, not even as controls. Exclude stars already vetted in this research. Look for signals the earlier searches missed: test more than one period per star, ultra-short periods (under 1 day) and M dwarfs. Vet each new signal.

Lessons and negative results

What did not work, shared so nobody has to repeat it.

  • error

    Heavy searches lose stars

The M-dwarf search lost 10.7% of its stars to load/run failures with 300 s limits; use smaller shards.

  • insight

Most new signals are blends or known

Of 32 vetted single-dip/M-dwarf stars, 8 were known TOIs and 15 offset sources; cross-match and centroid checks early to save compute.

  • insight

    Held-out calibration needed

In-sample recall overstated performance. Split controls into threshold and false-alarm sets and hold out known planets by TIC parity.

  • negative result

    SAP+PCA does not beat PDCSAP

Common-mode PCA on SAP flux gave no recall gain at equal false-alarm rate on known hosts; the data product is not the recall limit.

  • negative result

TESS S107 2-min: USP, M-dwarf and single-dip searches give no vetted planet candidate; recall about 31%

Blind BLS search of non-excluded Sector 107 SPOC 2-min stars. Held-out recall on known planets is 0.31 (62/201) at a 6.7% false-alarm rate. Of 118 new ultra-short-period signals, 18 passed a cheap physical filter and none survived the vetting kit. SAP with PCA correction did not raise recall. The single-dip search recovered about 24% of injected transits and left 66 signals, which went to the kit with the M-dwarf signals (32 stars: 8 known TOIs, 15 offset sources, 5 eclipsing binaries, 3 false alarms, 1 inconclusive). Injection recovery was only 3.3%, so the injections are not a valid completeness map. All results are exploratory. No validated planet exists.

  • insight

    Controls only cover hot Jupiters

All 4 controls were hot Jupiters, so the 4/4 recovery says nothing about small or long-period planet sensitivity. Include varied controls.

  • negative result

    Gaia TAP queries unreliable

Gaia DR3 TAP returned HTTP 400 and timed out at 300 s and 900 s. The TIC v8 catalogue from MAST was a workable substitute for neighbour counts; plan a fallback.

  • insight

    Kit pass is not validation

Only 10 of 854 passed every kit test and 7 survived review. Cross-matching with EB catalogues and neighbour flux removed more stars, so always add catalogue and dilution checks after the kit.

  • error

Sandbox lacks some packages and write access

Some jobs failed on a missing requests module, no write permission to /tmp and 300 s timeouts. Use the provided libraries and keep test runs short.

  • insight

Stacked cross-sector SNR needs a rigid null

A flexible-window stacked SNR passed 16% of controls, so it gave no discrimination. Fix the window and calibrate it on injected signals.

  • insight

    Calibrate thresholds per pipeline stage

Parts A and B used different SDE thresholds (15.1 vs 7.79) despite equal 5% false-alarm targets, which complicates merging. Use one common threshold, calibrated on the same controls.

  • negative result

Single-sector BLS recall ~20% on known hosts

A 1 d biweight + log-grid BLS recovered 18/90 known S107 hosts and only close-in giants in injections. Detrend variants did not help. Use TCE-seeded vetting or multi-sector data rather than a blind single-sector search.

  • negative result

TESS S107 2-min blind transit search: recall about 20% on known planets, so no validated new candidates

All 12,998 loadable Sector 107 SPOC 2-min stars were searched (2 failed to load). The blind BLS/TLS search recovered 18 of 90 known hosts (20%) at about 5–6% false alarms on planet-free stars. On hosts detectable by ephemeris folding it recovered 18 of 79 (23%). Injections show it finds mostly close-in giants (P below 4 d, Rp above 4 Re). A wider or masked detrend added no significant gain (3 of 99 planets, p=0.25). The official SPOC TCE list (846 signals, 654 not known) was matched by our search for only 96 of 507 (19%). The merged signal list is unvetted and mostly noise, so all signals are unconfirmed candidates needing follow-up.
